In 1999, Ruben and his family permanently moved to Brownsville where he spent the rest of his days. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play in his backyard pool occasionally joining them. He loved watching Western movies and talking from time to time with his neighbors and the many acquaintances that stopped by his home.
