Marion L. Lee Carter, Jr., 72, of Brownsville, Texas, formerly of Leavenworth, died Saturday July 26th, 2008 at Valley Baptist Hospital in Brownsville after a brief illness. He was born October 12, 1935 in Leavenworth, Kansas, the son of Marion and Martha Schonherr Carter, Sr.. He married Deanna Doege in June of 1961, they later
orced.
Survivors include his children, Leeann Mike Fitzgerald of Leavenworth; Cyndi Jeff Fry of Lansing; Sandi Olson of Prescott, Arizona; and Marion L. Carter, III of Leavenworth; his grandchildren Jessie Fry, Deanna Hogan, Cassidy Olson, and Lee Carter. He is also survived by two sisters, Marjorie Steve Stephens and Martha Flanders, a nephew Dan Flanders, his aunts, cousins, and many good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Melvin Leonard.
Lee grew up in Bain City and attended Leavenworth High School. In 1952 he joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for 30 years, both on active duty 22 years and in the Naval Reserve, including tours in the Korean and Vietnam wars. Lee was a decorated war veteran earning many citations, commendations and medals including the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He served on many ships including the USS James C. Owens, USS Vesuvius, USS Ranger and the USS Colahan. Lee loved serving his country and held many fond memories of his shipmates.
In 1972, Lee returned to Leavenworth and served as a Naval Recruiter. After his retirement he worked for Herring Surveying Company in Leavenworth and moved to Brownsville, Texas in 1999 to play golf every day. Lee spent his most enjoyable moments shooting the breeze with his many friends and neighbors. His stories and humor will be sadly missed by friends and family.
Visitation was held Thursday, July 31, 2008, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Belden-Larkin Funeral Home. Funeral services was held Friday, August 1, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel with a full military burial to follow at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be given to the America Cancer Society or the Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society in honor of his beloved dog, Rusty.
