Lucy J. Cortez, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on February 6, 2025, in Brownsville, Texas. Born on July 24, 1948, in Brownsville, she dedicated her life to both her family and her career.
Lucy worked for 40 years and retired as a Regional Coordinator with The Texas Department of State Health Services. She took pride in her work and was known for her serious and perfectionist personality. Education was important to her, as she held a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in August of 1989, a master’s degree in education in August of 1993, and made the Dean’s List at The University of Texas at Brownsville, Fall of 1992.
In her personal life, Lucy was calm and kind. She enjoyed watching the Food Channel and writing down her favorite recipes. She enjoyed spending time watching Joel Osteen and reading the Bible. Sweet treats were also among her favorite things to enjoy.
She is survived by her loving husband, Antonio M. Cortez, and their three children: Marco Antonio (Esmeralda) Cortez, Amy Cortez, and Jose Antonio (Aida) Cortez. Lucy is also survived by her three brothers: George Hinojosa, Roy Hinojosa and Louis Hinojosa. Lucy was also a proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren and a great-grandmother to 5 great-grandchildren.
Lucy is preceded in death by her parents, Lucio Lopez Hinojosa and Gloria Garcia Lopez, as well as her sister, Lisa Hinojosa, and her brother, Alfredo Hinojosa.
Lucy J. Cortez will be remembered for her loving spirit and dedication to her family. May Lucy rest in eternal peace.
Visitation services will be held at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home in San Benito, Texas, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, from 8:15 AM to 10:30 AM. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM at San Martin Cemetery in Santa Rosa, Texas, followed by burial at 11:30 PM.
