Josefa Campos

February 6, 1934 — March 25, 2025

Josefa D. Campos, 91, passed away peacefully at Sunshine Haven Hospice Care Facility on March 25, 2025, surrounded by her loving family following a severe, unexpected stroke. She was born in Los Fresnos, Texas to Matilde Deimes (†) and Maria Mares Deimes (†) and was their last surviving child. Josefa is preceded in death by her husband, Arturo, daughter, Hilda Vega (Boris), and sons Capt Arturo Campos, Jr., USMC, Ret. (Tang) and Oscar. Of her 12 children, left to cherish memories of her, include Rosalinda Ingle (SgtMaj Jerry Ingle, USMC, Ret.) of Brownsville, Sylvia Montoya (MSG Daniel Montoya, USA, Ret.) of Hereford, Arizona, Dorina Najera (Dr. Israel Jr.) of Austin, Josie Villarreal (Leo) of Brownsville, Javier Jaime (Sylvia) of Brownsville, Arnoldo (Leticia) of Houston, SSgt Hector Campos, USMC, Ret. (Isabel) of Fort Worth, Sandra Campos of Brownsville and Orlando of Harlingen. Josefa leaves behind 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

For most of her life, she was dedicated to raising her 12 children. It is often said that she probably made enough tortillas in her lifetime to reach the moon and washed enough laundry to circle the earth. She was proud to know that she raised children who would have an indelible impact on others. As her children grew, she helped provide daycare for many of her grandchildren so that her kids could go to college and start their professional careers. She was born in an era when daughters went to school just long enough to learn to read, write, and do simple arithmetic. Following the completion of her eighth-grade school year she was forced to leave school and help work on the family farm in Los Fresnos. Despite this, she realized the importance of an education and emphasized this to all her children during their formative years. She was elated and proud as she witnessed her children graduate college.

Grandma, as she was affectionately known by her grandkids, was a guiding light to them. She helped instill a strong sense of love, discipline, humility, tolerance and respect. She never judged anyone but tried to understand, and always had a smart, quirky Spanish “dicho” to make sense. She knew that everyone marched to the beat of their own drum, but that all are children of God. She was a very loving and caring human with a warm sense of humor.

In her last years she lived a very happy, comfortable life with her daughter, Sandra. She looked forward to holidays, family gatherings, and visits from her children and grandchildren from out of town. Her face would fill with glee and her heart would melt.

Mom and grandma will be dearly missed.
