Dr. Jorge E. Navarro, mathematics professor, died Thursday, Oct. 21, after losing his battle with cancer. He was 61.
Navarro was born Jan. 16, 1949, in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. He joined the university in 1995 as a mathematics professor, a position he held until his death. Navarro first came to Brownsville and Texas Southmost College as a student in 1964 when he was just 15. Navarro was a student at TSC from fall of 1964 through the summer of 1966. He transferred to Loyola University Chicago where he received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1969. He continued his studies, receiving his masters in 1972 from Northeastern University in Boston. Navarro went back to Mexico to teach at El Instituto Tecnolgico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey and at the Universidad Autnoma de Nuevo Leon, Mexico. He returned to Northeastern University, where he continued teaching while he earned his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1995.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gabriel Navarro and Antonia Molina Navarro and brother Luis Navarro.
He is survived by his wife Ana Chaires Navarro, son Luis Jose Silva, daughter Alejandra Silva, and a grandson Bryce A. Mills.
The family will receive visitors in the Education and Business Complex, Salon Cassia, on the UTBTSC Fort Brown Campus from 28 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25. A memorial service will take place in Salon Cassia at 6 p.m.
