In Loving Memory of Rev. Dr. Jorge Eduardo Torres

Rev. Dr. Jorge Eduardo Torres, age 89, entered eternal rest on August 18, 2026. Born on November 16, 1936, to Rosa Victoria Torres and Roberto Hernandez, Jorge lived a remarkable life defined by unwavering faith, service to others, perseverance, and a deep love for God and his family.

Jorge was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Aminta Torres, and a loving father to his three sons, Christian Torres (Evelyn), Emanuel Torres, and Abraham Torres. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Emanuel Torres, who passed away at the age of 22. He is survived by his wife, Aminta; his sons, Christian and Abraham; his brother, Edgar and Rene Hernandez; his three beautiful granddaughters, Isabella, Emma and Sophia, and many relatives, friends, fellow ministers, and members of the churches and communities whose lives he touched.

Throughout his life, Jorge embraced many different callings. As a young man, he worked as a tour guide and later became an accountant. Eventually, however, his faith and desire to serve others led him to dedicate his life to Christian ministry.

Jorge became an ordained minister, pastor, church planter, teacher, and mentor. He founded and pastored Maranatha Church in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and later served for twenty years as a pastor at Bella Vista Christian Church in Brownsville, Texas. His ministry was much more than an occupation—it was his calling and one of the great purposes of his life.

Retirement did not end Jorge's ministry. He continued serving God by mentoring new pastors, encouraging them in their calling, and helping them establish and grow new churches. He even moved to Laredo, Texas, for a time after retirement to help plant and establish another church. He believed that his responsibility to serve God and others did not end with a title, position, or age.

Jorge also believed deeply in education and lifelong learning. In his 70s, at an age when many people might have considered their schooling complete, he continued his education and earned his doctoral degree. His accomplishment reflected the determination and discipline with which he approached his entire life.

Above all, Jorge was a deeply spiritual man. One of the lessons he continually shared with his family was that the church should not be a place of judgment. The church is for sinners, and God accepts everyone. He taught that what ultimately matters is a person's own relationship with God—not what other people may think, say, or feel about them.

Jorge lived that belief. He did not turn people away because of who they were, where they came from, or what they had done. Instead, he prayed with them, talked with them, listened to them, and tried to help them know the love and grace of God. His ministry was grounded in compassion rather than judgment.

He was also a fighter. Jorge faced the challenges of life with quiet strength and rarely complained. He was a provider, a man of discipline, and someone his family could depend upon. His strength was not only physical; it came from a faith that remained with him throughout his life.

Jorge believed in taking care of himself and staying active. He was an avid swimmer and loved exercise. He enjoyed riding bicycles and continued going to the gym and remaining physically active well into his 80s. That determination was simply part of who he was—he kept moving forward.

Jorge Eduardo Torres leaves behind far more than the positions he held or the accomplishments he achieved. His greatest legacy lives in his family, the churches he helped build, the pastors he mentored, the people he prayed with, and the countless lives touched by his faith and kindness.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever honored by his family and by all those whose lives were blessed by knowing him.

El Rev. Dr. Jorge Eduardo Torres, de 89 años, entró al descanso eterno el 18 de agosto de 2026. Nacido el 16 de noviembre de 1936, hijo de Rosa Victoria Torres y Roberto Hernandez, Jorge vivió una vida extraordinaria caracterizada por una fe inquebrantable, el servicio a los demás, la perseverancia y un profundo amor por Dios y por su familia.

Jorge fue un esposo dedicado a su amada esposa, Aminta Torres, y un padre amoroso de sus tres hijos, Christian Torres (Evelyn), Emanuel Torres y Abraham Torres. Fue precedido en la muerte por su amado hijo, Emanuel Torres, quien falleció a la edad de 22 años. Le sobreviven su esposa, Aminta; sus hijos, Christian y Abraham; su hermano, Edgar, Rene; y sus tres hermosas nietas Isabella, Emma y Sophia, así como numerosos familiares, amigos, compañeros de ministerio y miembros de las iglesias y comunidades cuyas vidas fueron tocadas por él.

Fundó y pastoreó la Iglesia Maranata en Ciudad de Guatemala, Guatemala, y posteriormente sirvió por veinte años como pastor en la Iglesia Cristiana Bella Vista en Brownsville, Texas. Para él, el ministerio era mucho más que una profesión: era su llamado y uno de los grandes propósitos de su vida.

La jubilación no puso fin al ministerio de Jorge. Continuó sirviendo a Dios como mentor de nuevos pastores, animándolos en su llamado y ayudándolos a establecer y desarrollar nuevas iglesias. Incluso después de jubilarse, se mudó por un tiempo a Laredo, Texas, para ayudar a plantar y establecer otra iglesia. Jorge creía que su responsabilidad de servir a Dios y a los demás no terminaba con un título, un puesto ni con la edad.

Jorge también creía profundamente en la educación y en continuar aprendiendo durante toda la vida. Ya en sus 70 años, cuando muchas personas podrían haber considerado terminados sus estudios, continuó su educación y obtuvo su doctorado. Por encima de todo, Jorge fue un hombre profundamente espiritual. Una de las enseñanzas que compartía constantemente con su familia era que la iglesia no debe ser un lugar de juicio. La iglesia es para los pecadores, y Dios acepta a todos. Enseñaba que, al final, lo que verdaderamente importa es la relación personal de cada uno con Dios, y no lo que otras personas puedan pensar, decir o sentir acerca de uno.

Jorge vivió de acuerdo con esa convicción. Nunca rechazaba a las personas por quienes eran, por su procedencia ni por lo que hubieran hecho. Por el contrario, oraba con ellas, conversaba con ellas, las escuchaba y procuraba ayudarlas a conocer el amor y la gracia de Dios. Su ministerio estuvo fundamentado en la compasión y no en el juicio.

También fue un luchador. Jorge enfrentó las dificultades de la vida con fortaleza serena y rara vez se quejaba. Fue un proveedor, un hombre disciplinado y alguien en quien su familia podía confiar. Su fortaleza no era solamente física; provenía de una fe que permaneció con él durante toda su vida.

Jorge creía en cuidar de sí mismo y mantenerse activo. Fue un ávido nadador y disfrutaba mucho del ejercicio. Le gustaba andar en bicicleta, incluyendo muchos paseos que compartió con su hijo Abraham, y continuó asistiendo al gimnasio y manteniéndose físicamente activo hasta bien entrados sus 80 años. Esa determinación era simplemente parte de quien él era: siempre siguió adelante.

Jorge Eduardo Torres deja un legado mucho mayor que los cargos que ocupó o los logros que alcanzó. Su mayor legado permanece en su familia, en las iglesias que ayudó a construir, en los pastores a quienes guió y aconsejó, en las personas con quienes oró y en las innumerables vidas que fueron tocadas por su fe y su bondad.
