James Morgan VanValkenburgh, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Brownsville, Texas on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 with his wife and daughters at his side.
He was born in Stamford, CT and lived his earlier years in New England. Since 1976, he has enjoyed living in Brownsville.
His schooling included Unquowa, Mount Herman and Roger Ludlow High School in Fairfield, CT. He was proud to be a Corporal in the Army ROTC. He received his B.S. in Entomology from University of Maine and a Masters in teaching from Columbia University. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1985 but continued his lifelong interest in the stock market.
He had many other interests including genealogy, gardening, classical music, reading and politics. He was a member of NARFE, National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He was predeceased by his parents Reverend Morgan D. and Helen Pease VanValkenburgh and his brother Morgan D. VanValkenburgh.
He is survived by his wife Jane Miles VanValkenburgh daughters Betty Gary Maffei of Londonderry, NH and Carol Ann VanValkenburgh of Wilmington, MA grandchildren: Michelle, Kevin and Keith Maffei, Diane and Adam Brown sister, Kathryn Birkmaier inlaws: Ruth and Skip Hassenmayer, Dot and Bob Miles, Marc White, Alice Miles and many other extended family and friends.
A special thanks to all those who cared for him in the past 3 months including Dr. Juan Martinez, Dr. Ahmad Karkoutly and Dr. Christopher Wilson.
Calling hours are from 1 3 PM on Sunday, June 9, 2013 with a prayer service to follow at 3 PM at Trevinos Funeral Home, Old Port Isabel Rd, Brownsville. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Odyssey Hospice, the American Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice. Memorial service and burial will be in CT at a later date.
