Israel M. Najera 88, of Brownsville, Texas went home to our Lord on February 17, 2013.
Israel is preceded in death by his parents Desiderio and Eliza Najera, his first wife Maria G. Najera, daughter Angelica N. Garcia, brother Roberto Najera, and a sister Aurora N. Vasquez.
Israel is survived by his second wife Ofelia R. Najera, his children Aurora Jose Garcia of Brownsville, TX, Dr. Israel Dorina Najera Jr., of Austin, TX, Daniel Amelia Najera of Brownsville, TX., Ismael Najera of Brownsville, TX., Elisa Narciso Cerda of Brownsville., Enrique Nelda Najera of Brownsville, TX., and Desiderio Carmen Najera of Brownsville, TX., a sister Ludivina L. Garza of Pasadena, TX. He was blessed with 29 grandchildren and 40 greatgrandchildren.
At the young age of 16 he enlisted in the Civilian Corps Conservation CC Camp and served in New Mexico. In 1947 Israel joined the City of Brownsville Fire Department and during his 40 year service he rose to become the Assistant Fire Chief. He belonged to The Brownsville Fire fighters Association local 970 and he was a charter and a lifetime member of the association, and was a member of the International Association Fire Fighter. Israel was involved in numerous civic activities.
Israel emphasized strong work ethic, not just working hard but doing best job one can do. He believed in family unity. Staying strong and supporting each other was very important to him. Even though he spoke with authority, he always made you feel like you could succeed and conquer anything you put your mind too. He commanded respect and led by example. Israel might have been firm at times but he was always supportive and believed in education, while he never got to finish high school he set his mind and succeeded his profession and became a fire fighter. To those who knew him they knew his hand shake was his contract. Israel worked for the betterment of others and his community and took time to teach children how to become good citizen by his strong push for education and his involvement with youngsters in sports. Especially little league. He was admired for his strong moral ethics values in life. Israel was a devoted husband and father. His friends looked up to him to provide guidance and leadership. Everyone who was fortunate to have known him knew he was a ONE OF A KIND .
Visitation will be on begin on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 from 9am to 9pm with a Holy Rosary at 7pm. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 from 9am to 1 pm. Funeral Mass will take place at Christ the King Catholic Church at 2pm on Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Israel Njera Jr., Daniel Njera, Ismael Njera, Enrique Njera, and Desiderio Njera.
