Edmundo R. Gonzalez, Jr., age 84, of Brownsville, Texas, passed away on April 21, 2026.
Born April 25, 1941, in Laredo, Texas, he was preceded in death by his parents, Edmundo R. Gonzalez, Sr. and Maria Ana Barreda de Gonzalez, and by his brother Jorge H. Gonzalez.
Edmundo was a graduate of Kansas State University, Class of 1964, holding a bachelors degree in civil engineering. He honorably served his country in the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant. He proudly served in the 35th Corps of Engineering from 1964-1966. He also was the recipient of The Army Commendation Medal for his service.
A committed civic leader and professional, he served: as president of the Texas State Board of Engineers, Texas State Board Chair, President of the Brownsville Food Bank, Chairman of the Brownsville United Way and many other local, Texas and national organizations. Owned and operated Gonzalez Engineering & Surveying, Inc. Brownsville, Texas from 1983–2025.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Gonzalez; children Rebecca Gonzalez, Camille Atkinson (Charles Atkinson), April Delgado (Pedro Delgado), and Edmundo R. Gonzalez III (Amy Gonzalez); grandchildren Maddilyn Gonzalez, Gabriella Gonzalez, Lauren Chisholm (Brandon Chisholm), Charles Atkinson (Melissa Atkinson), Camryn Atkinson (Jesus Moreno), Camille Atkinson, and Franchesca Huerta-Parker (Leonard Parker); great grandchildren Victoria Chisholm, Austin Atkinson, Nicholas Delgado and his brother Roberto A. Gonzalez (Guadalupe Ortuno de Gonzalez).
Edmundo enjoyed going out to our ranch El Sauz with family and friends while also teaching about the history of the ranch and respect for the outdoors. He was an avid hunter both domestically and abroad, ballistic reloading enthusiast, and fan of Latin American Golden Age films and Mexican Revolutionary music.
He was respected by his contemporaries and loved by all who knew him. He will be remembered for his professional integrity, dedication to service, and devotion to family.
The service will be held at St Luke’s Church, 2800 Rockwell Dr, Brownsville, TX 78521 , at 10am and reception following at Central Christian Church, 1100 E Alton Gloor Blvd, Brownsville, TX 78526 at 11:30am on Monday, May 4, 2026..
