Dr. Milton H. Stern, 85, died Thursday, June 19, 2008 in Brownsville. Born June 5, 1923 in Pelly, Texas, he was the third of five children born to Austrian immigrants Frieda Rhoda Ginsberg and Abraham Louis Stern. Following graduation as valedictorian from Robert Lee High School in Baytown, he soon became a member of the 37th Division and served the entirety of World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He received his first Purple Heart in 1945 after being wounded in the Philippines. After a medical discharge due to contacting malaria, he returned to service with the Medical Corps, serving as a surgical technician with the 3rd Infantry Division. He received a battlefield commission in 1952 and was soon promoted to 1st Lieutenant. During his second tour in Korea, he was seriously wounded by artillery fire as he tended to wounded in a front line foxhole in the Kumwha Sector and was later awarded two additional Purple Hearts. Between both wars, he also was awarded, among many, two Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Ribbon, a Commendation Ribbon and recommended for the Silver Star.
Despite his decorated military career, Dr. Stern managed to earn three degrees from the University of Texas including his Doctorate of Medicine from UTMB in Galveston in 1963. Following his residency, he spent 25 years with the Veterans Administration hospital in Waco, Texas as a staff psychiatrist taking care of his fellow soldiers.
Dr. Stern was preceded in death by his parents, Frieda Rhoda Stern and Abraham Louis Stern, sisters, Sylvia Pearl Stern and Doris Leonora Stern and a nephew Michael Louis Friedman.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rina May Stern, daughters Odelia Stern Chavez Dino of Brownsville, Dr. Corinne Elizabeth Stern of Laredo, Teresa Ann Stern of Brownsville, a son Ronald Sean Stern of Waco, grandson, Michael and grandchildren, Danielle, Dino II, Alexandra, Dominic and Isabella Chavez. In addition, he is survived by his brother Arnold Irving Stern of Anniston, Alabama, a sister Susanna Ruth Friedman of Houston and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in his memory to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 2807 Old Spanish Trail, Suite A, Houston, Texas 77054.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at Spanish Meadows and Odyssey Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 11:00 am at Trevino Funeral Home Chapel with Military Honors conducted under the direction of VFW Post 2035.
