Delbert Runyon, 85, a longtime South Texas educator, died peacefully June 15, 2012, in Brownsville, TX, after a short illness.
Born in 1926 in Brownsville to Robert and Amelia Medrano Runyon, he was the youngest of six children. His family roots on his mothers side date back more than four centuriesin northern Mexico and South Texas. His father was a highly acclaimed photographer, merchant, botanist and former Brownsville mayor in the 1940s.
Mr. Runyon served in the U.S. military during World War II. After his service to the country, he received a bachelors degree in English from the University of Texas and a masters degree in Spanish from PanAmerican University.
After several successful business ventures, including aprinting company in Mexico City, Mr. Runyon taught Spanish and English at Pace and Hanna High Schools in Brownsville, the Language Institute of UTBTSC,the Brownsville Adult Literacy Center, the former PanAmerican University, and the University of Texas at Dallas. From 1995 until his recentretirement, he served as fulltime lecturer of Spanish for the Modern Language Department at the University of Texas at Brownsville.
Mr. Runyon was preceded in death by his parents his brothers and sisters his three sons, Gregory, Geoffrey and Michael Runyon and his soninlaw, Jack Wilson of McAllen.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Eugenia Runyon of Brownsville his daughter, Cecily Runyon Wilson of McAllen his grandchildren, John Lewis and Matthew Landon Wilson of McAllen Kirk and Andrea Michelle Runyon of San Marcos and one greatgrandchild, Logan Wilson of McAllen.
A memorial service will be held at the Sacred Heart Church in Brownsville Friday, June 22 at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to the educational charity of their choice.
