Consuelo Avelar

Consuelo, 82, of Brownsville, TX, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, March 4, 2011. She was born in Brownsville, TX, to mother Elvira Zuniga and her father Santiago Flores, who passed away when she was a child.
As a high school teenager, Consuelo GarciaFlores was a star softball player of the Brownsville High School State Championship softball team in 1947. She shared her love of softball with the love of her life, Francisco Avelar, whom she later married after she graduated from Brownsville High School. Together ConsueloChelo and Frank enjoyed 12 years of running the International Baseball League in the Brownsville Community from 1960 to 1972. She played in softball teams with her five daughters for many years, and was always the cleanup batter of the teams. Her home was a place where neighborhood kids would come together and play baseball in the yard and had gallons of ice tea for everyone to drink.
Chelo and Frank were married for 62 years. They celebrated their 50th and 60th anniversaries with music and dinner at VICC with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, friends, and relatives.
Chelo was a devout Catholic and member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church for many years. She participated in teaching religion classes and marriage encounters. She was a member of ladies auxiliary with the Knights of Columbus until she could no longer participate. She instilled in all her children the importance of Gods love in their lives, to love and help each other, be honest, and hard working.
She lived an exemplary life and was devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Francisco Avelar, and 12 children of which are seven sons, and five daughters. The sons are Frank Avelar, Jr, and wife, Isabel Avelar Henry Avelar and wife Grace Avelar of Houston, TX Charles Avelar, and wife Josie Avelar Wally Avelar, and wife Linda Avelar Richard Avelar and wife, Cindy H. Avelar Robert Avelar James Avelar and wife Yvette Avelar
The daughters are Gloria A. Gonzales, Mary Rose A. LeBlanc and husband Robert LeBlanc of San Antonio Mary Ann A. Flores, and husband Alejandro Flores Ofelia A. Buffamonte, and husband Tom Buffamonte Mary Elizabeth AvelarGuerra, and husband Richard Guerra. She also has 29 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Special thanks to niece, Esperanza Luna, who was often there to help the family in times of need and prayer, to the day care providers, Margarita Hinojosa and Juanita Salazar, who helped take care of her. Special thanks to the daughters and sons who spent many days and nights in the hospitals with their mother through months of illness so that she would never be alone in an unfamiliar place. God Bless everyone for your love and tireless efforts.

Visitation for Consuelo Chelo F. Avelar will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a holy rosary on Monday, March 7, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. in the North chapel at Trevino Funeral Home.
A mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at St. Lukes Catholic Church with interment immediately following the mass at Buena Vista Burial Park.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Frank Avelar, Jr, and Henry Avelar.
Pallbearers will be, Charles Avelar, Wally Avelar, Richard Avelar, Robert Avelar, James Avelar, Robert Gonzales, Jr
